Product Description And Additional Pictures

We have a rare and stunningly beautiful Hall China Company, big eared cookie jar complete with its lid, produced in the Monterey green and gold pattern, which was designed by Eva Zeisel. The Hall China Company is still in business today, and opened their doors in East Liverpool, Ohio, in August of 1903. The Hall China Company innovated superior techniques and attracted many great artists through the years, including Eva Zeisel. I would be remiss in not mentioning the spectacular life and talent of this exceptional artist.

Born Eva Stricker in Budapest, 1906, Eva entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at age 17. After an apprenticeship to a traditional potter, Eva achieved journeyman status and moved to Schramberg, Germany, where she became the first woman to propel ceramic arts into contemporary mass production. In 1932, she moved to Russia as an experienced industrial designer. The Lomonosov factory in Leningrad (the former Imperial Porcelain Factory) recognized her talents, which led to her appointment as Artistic Director for the Porcelain and Glass Industries for the entire country. But in 1936 she was imprisoned for 16 months during a Stalinist purge, and was subjected to torture and brainwashing. Removed from her cell and sent on what Eva thought was a train ride to her execution, she ended up in Austria. From there she went to England and later married. She and her husband Hans Zeisel moved to New York in 1936. She taught ceramic arts industrial design in Brooklyn until 1952. In the late 1940s to early 1950s, Hall China Company commissioned Eva to create a more modernized dinnerware line and other ceramic pieces. Eva Zeisel received many honors for her outstanding achievements and her works are in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world.
