Our lovely 14 Piece Vintage Porcelain China-Painted Red Rose Gilded Chocolate Pot Set With 6 Cups & 6 Saucers is a wonderful example of the porcelain china painting industry, which was also a very popular hobby in Europe in the 19th century, and made its move into the United States in the late 1800's. Successful studios were created to produce elaborate designs and monogrammed china services for hotels, clubs, wealthy individuals and even for the White House. But the majority of the amateur china painters in the United States were women who were allowed to engage in creative occupations, in addition to many who considered it to be merely a hobby. World War II drastically reduced the art of china painting as every available hand - including those of women - was necessary for munitions production and the war effort. Due to the lack of importance placed upon many of the extremely talented female artists of the time, no notation was made of the pieces they produced, and thus their identities sadly faded into obscurity.
The unmistakable shape of our chocolate pot leads us to believe that our unmarked porcelain ware was imported from Bavaria, Germany. Painted with colors prevalent in the Victorian era, our chocolate pot set is decorated with vivdly detailed red roses. The background of the white porcelain bursts with hues of deep greens, muted blues and bright peach. All of the pieces are embellished with a repeating border trim of ornate hand painted gold. The lip and lid of the chocolate pot are also painted with a rim of gold, while the handle has hand applied gold tracing. The cups are identical to the chocolate pot with their gold treatment and decoration. Lacking the roses, the saucers have gold paint applied to the verge, in addition to their gold border trim.
The chocolate pot with lid measures 9-1/2" tall from the top of the lid to the base of the pot. It is 7" wide from the tip of the spout to the edge of the handle. The base of the pot is 5" in diameter.
The cups measure 3" tall, and 3" from the edge of the handle to the opposite edge of the rim. Their bowls measure 2" in diameter.
The saucers measure 5" in diameter.
This set is in excellent vintage - and quite possibly - antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. There is a small paint skip towards the bottom of the front of the chocolate pot, and also on one of the cups. There is nominal - if any - gold paint loss.
