Indiana Glass Company Vintage Clear Crystal Pouter Pigeon Set Of Bookends
Product Description And Additional Pictures
We have a beautiful pair Indiana Glass Company Vintage Clear Crystal Pouter Pigeon Bookends in very good condition. During the first half of the 20th century there were a number of Pouter pigeon bookends produced by various glass manufacturers, but we believe that these were made by the Indiana Glass Company from the 1930’s to the 1940’s. Our Indiana Glass Company Vintage Clear Crystal Pouter Pigeon Set Of Bookends stand 6" tall, and sit on a base that is 3" deep.
At one time, Pouter pigeons were prized and raised by people for their unusual decorative appearance which was caused by their large, inflatable crop, giving the bird an extremely puffed-out chest. In fact the crop is really a hyper-inflatable sac where food is stored at the beginning of the bird’s digestive process. According to Wikipedia, Pouter pigeons have been bred in Europe for over 400 years!
These very dense, very heavy (4 lbs) Indiana Glass Company Vintage Clear Crystal Pouter Pigeon Set Of Bookends are in near-perfect condition, with only one of the bookends having a couple of nicks at two corners on the bottom of its base. That same bookend also shows the pontil left by the glassblower’s rod during the glass blowing process – we tend to think that the wonderful pontil more than makes up for the two small nicks!
